Updated: Aug 24, 2021

Choosing a color is a big decision.

Choosing correctly will assure you enjoy your space, while choosing wrong will make you feel uncomfortable.

Once you realize the effect of the color you choose the process will become even more exciting

Before painting your wall take a look at the tips below to assist you in your painting project.

Designer: Enat Nachshon

1. Ask yourself what vibe you want the room to have.

First thing I recommend is to know what the purpose of the space is.

What kind of energy would you like to achieve with the colors on your walls?

Do you want the vibe to be more relaxing or more energizing?

The answers to these questions will help you to decide which group of colors to choose.

Warm tones create a stimulating environment and bring a home to life.

Cool tones are used more for relaxation and Zen environments as nature does.

2. Warm colors vs Cool colors

Colors are divided into two main categories, cold and warm colors.

Warm colors include red, orange, and yellow hues. These are energetic and vivid colors.

The color red is considered a color that transmits passion. The color orange is considered a color that encourages communication and yellow is considered a cheerful color that can bring life to any room.

Cold colors include the white, blue, green, purple, and pink shades and they are considered soothing colors.

The color green is the color of nature, it suits bedrooms and bathrooms because of its soothing effect, The color blue brings more relaxation and is used often in spa rooms.

The color purple is considered a spiritual color that encourages concentration and meditation.

The color white transmits tranquility and intellectuality and is used in offices and clinics.

Each color has its qualities and using them correctly in spaces will help you achieve the vibe you are aiming for.

3. Small vs Large space

When you want to paint walls, you will need to analyze the size and the height of your space.

If you have a small space or low ceiling, you want to paint everything the same and you want to keep your colors bright or even white to achieve the illusion of a larger space.

If your space is large, you can use darker colors to make it feel smaller and cozier.

Another way to make your large space with a high ceiling feels cozier, is to paint it with a darker shade than the walls, so it will create the illusion that your ceiling is lower than it really is.

4. Buying color samples

After doing all of the above, the time to buy the colors has arrived.

First, you should select the main color that you want to dominate your space because the secondary colors will always be picked up after.

It is important to know not to pick the color from chips because the lighting in the store is different from the one you have at home, Instead, you can ask the seller to bring you “Drawdown” or “Brush out”, these are the larger version of the paint chip.

If it is hard for you to decide which color you want, you can choose up to three different shades of color samples.

5. Paint on your wall small square footage

Now it is the time for the “The Rule of 3”.

After buying up to 3 different shades of colors, you will paint 3 samples of 3 squares footage in 3 different levels on the wall for each sample you bought..

The first is going to be at the “Eye level”.The second will be close to the ceiling and the third will be at the “Floor level”.You want to know how the color project in the morning light, the afternoon light, and in the evening light.

Let the paint dry and live with this for 3 days to see it in many light conditions as you can before you make your call. This is a great way to save you costs and frustration.

The one that actually works the best for all 3 days, it is the one you will end up selecting.

Good luck and enjoy your DIY project.
